The Public Works Department of the City of Wolf Point is a major function of the government which provides those services necessary to achieve a satisfactory living environment for the community and individual. It is responsible for the overall supervision, control, budgeting, and coordination of programs in the streets, cemetery, parks, airport, and the Enterprise funds, which include water, sewer and solid waste.

Spread throughout the City of Wolf Point, are a variety of parks. Each provides a different sense of purpose of enjoyment. For an active family, there is Borge Park, which provides a variety of activity for all ages. This is truly a “show case” park. It is home for many Wolf Point families during the summer months. There is Sherman Park in downtown Wolf Point that is home to the Shumway Gazebo that was bestowed upon the residents of Wolf Point by Roy and Loretta Shumway in loving memory of Frank and Anna Shumway, Roy’s parents.

The City of Wolf Point is committed to providing convenient and affordable solid waste services to the citizens of our community. The city’s fully automated collection service allows our collection costs to remain at an affordable rate.

Borge Park is located on the north side of Wolf Point. It was named after a prominent doctor, Dr. H.J. Borge, who maintained a medical practice in the area for approximately 35 years. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held in July, 1982 with Mayor Keith Bryan present.

Next to the Firehall in Wolf Point, is a beautiful park located in a residential area on the west end of Main Street.   It provides a cool place to rest during the hot summer months in Wolf Point.  It’s also a great place to sit and watch the parades during the Wolf Point Stampede.  During the Stampede celebration in July, the park is utilized for “cowboy church”.  A flatbed trailer provides the pulpit and the park is the outdoor church.

Located along the south side of U.S. Highway #2, just west of Town Pump and north of a local grocery store, Triangle Park provides travelers to take a break from their travels. A historical marker is located within this park and provides the travelers with a little insight to the history of Wolf Point. Picnic tables and benches are provided for their convenience allowing travelers to get out of their vehicle and stretch their legs before continuing on U.S. Highway #2. This park replaces a portion of the Benton Street Park (aka Library Park) that was sold.

Located in downtown Wolf Point, this park serves as the hub for many activities held in the City of Wolf Point throughout the year. The park was named after Sherman T. Cogswell. He was a leader in commercial development in Wolf Point in 1915 and was instrumental in the chartering of First State Bank and the construction of the grand old Sherman Hotel. Today the Sherman Motor Inn still bears his name.

Animal Control Services is a function under Public Health. This area covers the impounding of dogs running at large; keeping records of impounded animals; disposition of unredeemed animals; licensing; and impounding those suspected of having rabies.

City ordinances require that all animals be licensed within the City of Wolf Point. It also prohibits the number of animals a homeowner may keep on his premises.

Animal Impound fees are dependent on how many the dog has been in the pound.

The City Attorney is an appointed position with the City of Wolf Point and is the Chief Legal Advisor for the Mayor, City Council/Committees and all other City Departments on legal questions as may arise in relation to the business of the city, and other duties as per state statute. The City Attorney’s office is located at 211 Main, Wolf Point Montana. Office hours are 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

In February 1926, two popular young men, James and Rolla Cusker, perished while driving home after a basketball game. With no ferry service during the winter, travelers crossed the Missouri River on the ice. The boys had used this method earlier, and retraced their tracks on their way home that evening. They followed the ruts they had made on the frozen river, but the river had warmed and they drove into an air hole in the ice. Unfortunately, their bodies were not found for several days.

Rapid railroad expansion and a booming agricultural economy dictated the establishment of Wolf Point as a Great Northern division point in 1917. Land was purchased north of the tracks and a 25-stall roundhouse was erected to service the giant steam locomotives, including a machine shop, ice house, numerous offices & storage buildings.

The Wolf Point Area Historical Society Museum is currently located at 203 U.S. Highway 2 East. Hours are 10 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday thru Friday, during the months of June through August. After years of residing in the basement of the Roosevelt Co. Library, the museum relocated to a better location on Highway #2. An addition was added later to allow for additional storage of vintage items.

During the depression years, the Roosevelt Co. Flying Club was organized under the guidance of George “Dewey” Lowers. This club established the Wolf Point Airport and the building of the first hanger. WPA funds were used with assistance from local citizens and the City-County Airport Board. In 1952, Lyman Clayton, Jr., once a student of Dewey Lowers, first offered the area charter service. In 1957, he joined a Northeastern Montana flying pioneer, Hub Ames of Scobey, in enlarging this service to include certified air ambulance and taxi service. Mr.

The City of Wolf Point was incorporated on July 15, 1915 and is located in the northeast corner of Montana in Roosevelt County.The city has a commission-executive (mayor-council) form of government. The city council consists of eight elected council members who are elected from four wards on a partisan basis for four year overlapping terms of office. The mayor is elected at-large for a four-year term of office. The city council which is the legislative body of the city, is responsible for determining the policy direction for the city.

The Public Works Director has general administrative and supervisory powers over all the streets and alleys, airport facilities, waterworks, sewage collection and disposal facilities, garbage collection and disposal, street lighting, building inspection and permits, and the various public works departments of the city. 

The vision of the Wolf Point Police Department is to enhance our image as a truly professional law enforcement agency representing all citizens fairly and exceeding expectations of our peers in law enforcement.
