Greenwood Cemetery

In the summer of 1916, L.M. Clayton opened Clayton Memorial Chapel as the first funeral establishment in Wolf Point, which operated as a family business continuously for approximately 88 years until 2005. In October, 1918 the “Spanish influenza” that was sweeping the nation arrived in northeast MT. Schools and all places of amusement, such as theatres and pool halls were closed by the local health officer, Doctor Mowatt. Within a few days, fifteen people died in Wolf Point; twenty-five people were lost in Scobey, a community 50 miles north of Wolf Point.

Mr. L.M. Clayton, Sr. was also responsible for the establishment of the first cemetery in Wolf Point. Several private cemeteries and an Indian cemetery were all that were in use during the flu epidemic. Mr. Clayton purchased a plot which was named “Greenwood Cemetery” after Mrs. Clayton, whose maiden name was Greenwood (Nora May). He formed the Greenwood Cemetery Association. With the help of the Woman’s Club, water lines were added to the cemetery. It was the intent of this group to make it the most beautiful cemetery in this region. This plot was later purchased by the City of Wolf Point and is the present Greenwood Cemetery.

The cemetery has two (2) Veteran Circles created for the burial of veterans and their spouses. During Veterans Day, the graves are decorated with small American flags and the local VFW holds a ceremony honoring those who have served our country.

A prominent structure located within Greenwood Cemetery is a chapel that was erected to the everlasting memory of Father Benedict Seehaler. Father Benedict became the first resident pastor in Wolf Point on January 19, 1917 and held this position for 14 years with the Immaculate Conception Church. This memorial is to honor Father Benedict for his years of missionary work and his pastorate of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wolf Point. Recently refurbished by members of the church, each year on Memorial Day, mass is held (weather permitting) at the Father Benedict Seehaler Memorial Chapel in Greenwood Cemetery.
